Athletic Club Have Reportedly Made An Offer To Thomas Tuchel
Just one week ago the thought of hiring Thomas Tuchel as the next Athletic Club manager was seen as wishful thinking and nothing more. While rumors suggested that the Basque giants were seriously interested in the German coach, Nika Cuenca reported that, contrary to what was being said, Athletic had not contacted Tuchel and that they knew his future was pointing to Bayern Munich. Now things have changed.
A few days ago news broke that Tuchel had rejected Bayern Munich’s offer to become their manager at the end of the season and the football world was turned on its head. English giants Arsenal and Chelsea immediately jumped to the head of the pack of clubs hoping to entice the German, but Athletic also saw the decision as an opportunity to put their name in the running.
On Wednesday Nika Cuenca reported that Athletic Club have made an offer to Tuchel to become the new manager this season and that the 44-year-old was intrigued and considering the Basque giants.
The mere fact that Tuchel hasn’t rejected Athletic’s offer by now is cause for optimism for Athletic fans. The former Borussia Dortmund boss is seriously considering the offer, but there is still heavy competition. Arsenal and Chelsea are definitely in the mix so the German will have his pick of clubs. That being said, Tuchel does have a good relationship with Jump Heynckes, who previously coached Athletic and is still good friends with Athletic President Josu Urrutia. This connection may be used in hopes of further convincing Tuchel to come to the San Mamés.
Only time will tell what will happen and the decision will all come down to Thomas Tuchel. It seems clear now that Athletic Club are seriously about courting the German and Urrutia makes to make a big hire before elections next year. If the German decides to turn down the offer, Athletic’s next choice appears to be Eduardo Berizzo who parted with Sevilla back in late December. Asier Garitano has also been heavily linked with the Basques, but has admitted that he is in talks with Leganes over a contract renewal. There is no denying that fans want change and want an established coach to take over this summer. It is going to be extremely difficult to bring in Tuchel, but fans should be excited to see Athletic fighting so hard for him right now.
