Kike Sola’s Time At Athletic Club Is Coming To An End

Kike Sola’s story is one of what could have been. A solid performer at Osasuna, Sola joined Athletic Club back in 2013 with hopes of challenging for a starting role or, at worst, functioning as a rotation player who could see significant minutes. Five years and three loan moves later it is clear that the move didn’t work out at all. The striker struggled to see the pitch and when he did he wasn’t able to offer much.

Now it looks as though the story is coming to an end. Sola is out of contract this summer and hasn’t received any calls from Athletic Club in regards to extending his deal. Sources close to the situation say that the 32-year-old is expected to leave the club this summer with everyone feeling that it is the best decision for club and player.

Sola may not be the only player on his way out this summer. Enric Saborit recently revealed that he too hasn’t received any calls in reference to an extension with his contract also set to expire. The left-back has seen increased minutes this season due to injuries to Mikel Balenziaga, but with Cristian Ganea coming in and Andoni Lopez knocking on the first team door it wouldn’t be surprising to see the 25-year-old say his goodbyes.

In the end it will be interesting to see where Kike Sola ends up. He was unable to hold down a regular place while on loan at Getafe and Numancia, but there is still belief that he could serve a major role in the second division. Clubs like Albacete, Mallorca, and Córdoba showed interest during the Winter, so perhaps they would be in the mix again. Sadly, the striker’s time at the San Mamés just didn’t pan out and that is the way it goes sometimes.
