One of the reasons for Athletic Club’s shortcomings this season has undoubtedly been the absence of Iker Muniain. The Lezama product suffered a torn ACL back in late September and was subsequently ruled out of action for six months. A few weeks ago he began to rejoin the training sessions and was quickly back with his teammates doing almost every drill. It was clear that his return was just around the corner.
On Tuesday Athletic Club officially announced that Muniain had been medically cleared to return to the pitch. He had met with doctors and underwent tests to check his recover and was discharged. In a video sent out to the fans Muniain stated, “I am happy to be able to help this team in the remaining matches”.
Muniain’s return is certainly reason for celebration. Last year the winger was arguably the most impactful player in the team and missing that this season has been disastrous. Still, there is a lot of debate among fans about whether or not the 25-year-old should actually play again this season. Some are concerned about possible re-injury while others want to see the player have the chance the get his legs back under him in a competitive environment.
If the decision is left up to Muniain he will play again this season. Every since the injury he has been vocal about getting back on the pitch and he wants to help his team. However, the decision will likely be made by the coaching staff. Although Muniain has been training normally, his fitness may still be a question. Even if he doesn’t play again this season, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see him at least named in the squad for some matches. Regardless of what happens, Iker Muniain is back and that should be celebrated.
