Athletic Club Want To Give Kepa Arrizabalaga The Highest Release Clause In The Team
A lot has been made about the ongoing negotiations between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Athletic Club regarding the keeper’s expiring contract. So far the club has made it clear that they want to place a very large release clause in his new contract and, in response, Kepa wants his wages to reflect that number. As of now the two sides have remained far apart on trying to come to an agreement regarding his wages, but there has been a new development in the ongoing negotiations.
According to a new report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Athletic want to give Kepa Arrizabalaga the highest release clause of anyone at the team. The current figure being discussed is somewhere around €75 million, which tops Aymeric Laporte’s current clause of €65 million. Of course, the Lezama product still wants his wages to reflect such a large clause.
During the winter Athletic offered Kepa a new deal making €700,000 which was increased to €1 million a few months ago. With the desire to make his clause even higher, the Basques have admitted that they are willing to raise that offer. However, only time will tell if Kepa believes it is a high enough wage bill to accept the offer. Reports in Bilbao remain firm that the keeper has told Athletic that he wants to stay at the club and continue as a Lion. For that to happen, they need to find common ground and put pen to paper on a new deal soon.
As things stand, Kepa’s current contract will expire in the summer and he will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January. El Correo has reported that there has been no contact from other clubs, including Real Madrid who are said to be very interested in signing the 22-year-old. Kepa wants to stay and Athletic definitely want him to remain at the San Mamés, but money is still an issue. In the player’s mind, if he is worth such a high release clause then he should also be getting paid like it too. The first of January will the target the get a new deal done and every day that passes without an agreement will give fans even more anxiety.
