Athletic Club 2-0 Girona: Postgame Player Comments

Athletic Club won their second straight La Liga match on Sunday when they defeated Girona 2-0 at the San Mamés. The three points have seen the Lions climb the table and currently sit tied with Sevilla for third place. Goals from Iker Muniain and Aritz Aduriz were the difference makers, but it was Athletic’s defense that put on the most dominant display. Following the game, Iago Herrerín and Mikel Balenziaga discussed the big win and the team’s defensive contribution. Here is what they had to say:

Iago Herrerín

“Today’s result was good and we are happy. Little by little we are finding the identity we want. We are happy because it’s the third game without conceding a goal. This is the way we have to continue playing. We need to take the season one game at a time because the year is very long. We have to keep in mind that we have seven games this month and that can wear down the team. I’m happy to play today. Kepa wasn’t able to because he’s had a fever. It’s normal to talk about his renewal because he is the future. When you do things well, the President will tell you. You have to focus on playing football. Kepa and the club knows what is going on.”

Mikel Balenziaga

“I think we played a good game against an opponent who makes you uncomfortable and does not like to let you dominate possession. We were well studied and we played our game, so I think the result was fair in the end, although they started well and made us play in our defensive zone. We played well defensively. It is a task in which everyone is involved, not just the defenders, and it is a key aspect to our games so far. We have a lot of games this month and this victory leaves us with good feelings going to Berlin. We have another big game next.”
