Going into the preseason it was already clear that this is going to be a vitally important season for Athletic Club in regards to the future. Several key players such as Kepa Arrizabalaga and Aritz Aduriz are in the last years of their contracts and the club will have to work hard in order to protect their talent. One of those stars is midfielder Beñat who has been one of the most important and influential players in the team since making his return back in 2013. Luckily, it finally looks like there is some good news on the matter.

Beñat is in talks to extend his contract with Athletic Club (Mundo Deportivo)

According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El CorreoBeñat has already begun contract renewal negotiations with Athletic Club. At least one meeting has already taken place at the end of August and both sides are hoping to reach an agreement very soon. The extension would see Beñat continue at Athletic for another 2-3 seasons.

Beñat has been very open about the fact that he wants to continue playing at his boyhood club. He has told the team that he has no interest in joining any other club and Athletic has no plans on letting him walk away either. With both sides eager to get a deal done quickly and easily, it may not take long at all before an extension is announced. The 30-year-old is still an integral part of the lineup and is expect to continue his role in the team for the foreseeable future.

Apart from Beñat, there are eight other players who are in the last years of their contracts: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Aritz Aduriz, Xabi Etxeita, Eneko Bóveda, Mikel Rico, Ager Aketxe, Kike Sola, and Enric Saborit. So far only Kepa and Beñat has been approached regarding extension, while Aduriz’s future remains solely up to him. If he wants to continue he will simply sign another one year deal. As far as the others are concerned, Kuko Ziganda will have some difficult decisions to make. Players like Eneko Bóveda, Mikel Rico, and Kike Sola could be playing their last seasons at the San Mamés. Still, there is a lot of time left for Athletic Club to sign players to contract extensions and that is sure to be a big topic of conversation as the weeks pass.
