During Sunday’s scoreless draw against Getafe, Athletic Club picked up a bit of bad news when Oscar De Marcos was forced to leave the pitch early in the first half. It was soon announced that the right-back had suffered a sprained left ankle and that he would be forced to miss some time. With a big Europa League clash against Panathinaikos on Thursday the Lions were hoping to be as healthy as possible. Now it looks as though they will have an important player back who has yet to play this season.
Monday’s training session saw the return of Ander Iturraspe who has been out the last few weeks with a muscle injury. The midfielder was able to participate in all activities and is expected to be available for Thursday’s match at the San Mamés. Whether or not he will actually play still remains to be seen.
Before going down injured, Kuko Ziganda said that he has high hopes for Iturraspe this season and that he expects the 28-year-old to play a major role in the team. The Lezama product missed the first game of the season, which was the first leg against Dinamo Bucuresti, due to a Europa League suspension carried over from last season. He then missed all the following games so far with his injury. The midfielder is ready to get back on the pitch and help his teammates try to achieve something great this season.
The Athletic fans also got a treat following Sunday’s game as Yeray was seen performing jogging and running drills with trainer Javier Clemente. Many at the San Mamés stayed behind for a while to cheer on the defender and show him their support in his ongoing battle with testicular cancer. All reports seem to indicate that the 22-year-old is still right on track with his recovery which has pegged him to return to regular football activities in the middle of September. Additionally, Oscar De Marcos will be undergoing tests on Monday to examine the full extent of his ankle injury and Iñigo Lekue is expected to fill in at right-back until he returns.
