Ziganda: The Best News Of The Day Was Unai Nuñez And Iñigo Córdoba’s Debuts
Athletic Club played to a scoreless draw with Getafe to begin their La Liga campaign which was certainly a disappointing start for the Lions. Kuko Ziganda’s team was definitely the stronger team at the San Mamés, but they struggled to beat the keeper despite having several great chances. After the match Ziganda spoke to the media and said that it was hard to break down Getafe because they kept so many players back in defense and that he didn’t see if the ball crossed the goal line when Kepa tried to make a stop early in the first half.
“It was a matter of creating more chances and scoring the ones that we had. We needed to do better and we failed. It cost us because they did well and kept many players behind the ball. When a team keeps ten men behind the ball it is hard to break that down. We were patience with our attacks and in the second half we were a bit rushed at times. I’m not going to go crazy one way or the others, these things happen. I did not see it or the penalty that Laporte supposedly should have had. We have to wait until tomorrow to get the results of De Marcos’ medical tests but we expect to lose him for a few weeks.”
Ziganda went on to say that he started Iñaki Williams because he felt that he could have a good day and because the team has to be careful with Aritz Aduriz this year. Also, he claimed that the best part of the day was seeing Unai Nuñez and Iñigo Córdboa make their first team debuts.
“Aduriz is doing well, but I sensed that Williams was going to have opportunities today. He did but was not able to score…but he will score. I am happy with the work he has done but we was tired at the end of the game. Aduriz can’t play 60 games this year. Well, the best news of the day was the debuts. Nuñez played very well and was at least at the level of his teammates. Córdoba also did well once he came on. He wasn’t afraid, neither of them were. They need to be congratulated for their debuts. We have two new players.”
Athletic Club will now turn their attention to Thursday’s Europa League clash with Panathinaikos. The Lions won 3-2 in Athens, Greece last week and will looking to book their place in the group stage of the tournament. Athletic will be without Ander Iturraspe and Oscar De Marcos who are dealing with injuries, but should still be able to field a very strong squad against the Greeks.
