Yeray Trains At The San Mamés Following Athletic’s Scoreless Draw Against Getafe

It has been over two months since it was discovered that Yeray had suffered a relapse in his battle with testicular cancer. At the time it was announced that he would have to undergo chemotherapy and would miss roughly three months of action, putting his return date somewhere in the middle of September. Since then he has been posting pictures on social media showing him at the Lezama training facility and has even been seen running outside with trainer Javier Clemente.

Following Athletic Club’s scoreless draw against Getafe on Sunday, Yeray took to the San Mamés to do some jogging and running work with Clemente as fans looked on with admiration. Many fans stayed behind in the stands to applaud the young defender and show their support. It was a very special moment that lifted everyone’s spirits after a disappointing result.

According to reports Yeray is right on track as far as his recovery is concerned which likely means that he will in fact be able to return in the middle of September. After being out of training for several months the 22-year-old will need to get back into football shape, so there just isn’t anyway of knowing how long it will be before he will back on the pitch. In the meantime Xabi Etxeita has been filling in beside Aymeric Laporte, although newly promoted Unai Nuñez made his debut in Sunday’s match and played at a very high level.

Athletic Club will now turn their attention to Thursday’s Europa League match against Panathinaikos after earning a dramatic 3-2 victory in the first leg in Athens. The winner of the tie will book a place in the group stage. The Lions will be without Ander Iturraspe and Oscar De Marcos who are both nursing injuries, as well as Yeray who will continue his chemotherapy sessions.
