Kepa Arrizabalaga Refuses To Discuss Contract Negotiations

Kepa Arrizabalaga is one of the stars of Athletic Club and very much the future of the goalkeeper position. However, the 22-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract and has been in renewal talks for several months now. “My renewal is an internal negotiation between the club and I and I will not make it public. What I can say is that I’m focused, happy, and prepared to have a great season and help the team. It is no problem for me, I still have a year left so it’s not like my contract ends tomorrow. It is a situation between the club and myself. I am calm and focused on Athletic. this is a part of football and there are eight players here who are in the last year of their contracts. It’s part of the game to have these negotiations. When there is something you will know.”

The keeper was also asked about his position on VAR after Getafe seemed to score a goal in Sunday’s match. Replay showed that the ball did cross the line, but Kepa said that being on the pitch makes it really hard to know just what has happened.

“When you are involved in the play it is difficult to know if the ball has crossed the line or not. It happened so fast and the referee has to make a quick decision. It isn’t an easy job. The sooner you can get up and pass the ball the less time the referee has to make a decision. VAR is a difficult debate. On one side it would help referees in situations like this, but football would also lose some of its essence. It is a decision for someone else.”

Reports have suggested that the only issue with Kepa’s renewal at the moment is over his desired wages. The club wants to place a very high release clause in his contract and the 22-year-old wants his wages to reflect that number. Sources close to the situation believe that a deal will eventually be reached and both sides are expected to meet again soon to continue negotiations.
