Vesga: I Must Work Hard To Prove That I Can Play Here

Mikel Vesga has been one of the biggest surprised of Athletic Club’s preseason so far. After a very successful six month loan spell at Sporting Gijon last season, the midfielder has proven that he deserves a place in the squad and is ready for a big role. In a surprise to many, Kuko Ziganda has named his as a started alongside Beñat, taking over for Mikel San Jose. Following Tuesday’s first training session the 24-year-old spoke to the media and said that he still has a lot of work to do to retain his place in the team.

“I am happy to return to Athletic Club. When you leave on loan the goal is always to come back and stay in the team. This has all just begun. Much lies ahead and I must work hard to prove that I can play here. I still have work to do every day. As a midfielder I’ve played in various positions, so I can adapt well. Leaving on loan helped me see that I am capable of playing in the Primer and it gave me a lot of confidence. Right now I am starting and my teammates in this position are very good. There is a very high level in the team. I have a good relationship with my peers like Beñat, Mikel San Jose, Ander Iturraspe, and Mikel Rico. We are all here to help improve the team. I did not expect to be in the lineup so soon, my first goal was just to stay in the squad.”

Vesga went on to say that Kuko Ziganda hasn’t changed things too much since taking over as the first team manager. The lack of major changes has helped the team transition easily and is paying off in a major way.

“In general Kuko conveys to everyone that he trusts them and he knows what everyone can bring to the team. We have followed the same dynamics of when we were at Bilbao Athletic. The changes have been small for the team and I think that is good because we have been able to maintain a normal level. Kuko wanted me to take this preseason to demonstrate that I can play in this team. I came back eager to start preseason training. I am doing well physically and from there it is for the Mister to decide.”

On Saturday Athletic Club will be in action against Deportivo Alaves in the Basque Country Cup final. It will be their last match of the summer and less than a week later they will be traveling to Greece to take on Panathinaikos in the knock-out round of the Europa League. It will be interesting to see if Mikel Vesga continues in the starting lineup, but so far he is giving fans a lot to be excited about.
