Dinamo Bucuresti 1-1 Athletic Club: Postgame Player Comments

Athletic Club are leaving Romania with a sour taste in their mouths. After scoring an early first half goal, the Lions let Dinamo get back into the game thanks to an amazing strike from Rivaldinho in the second half. With new energy, the home side made things difficult and the match finally ended in a 1-1 draw. Athletic will now have to get a good result at home next week to advance to the next round of the Europa League. After the game, Iker Muniain, Mikel Vesga, and Iago Herrin spoke to the media and were relatively pleased with the result and away goal. Here is what they had to say:

Iker Muniain

“We are 100% focused on the return with all of the ambition in the world because we know that continuing in the Europa League depends on that match. We know that we could have won. The attitude of the team has been good and the positive things were obvious. After they scored, they tightened up more and now we have to settle it at the San Mamés. The first half was complete. We had great pressure, possession, but in the second half the goal changed everything. We tried to take advantage of turnovers and holes in the defense, but we must be ratified with the general performance. We had to adapt to the pitch, but I don’t think it was a handicap. There were many memories, many emotions. The past is not forgotten. A dream ended there and today another dream began. We could write a long story in this competition.”

Mikel Vesga

“Even though we had a draw, scoring an away goal is not a bad result. We are looking forward to the match on Thursday at the San Mamés. In general we had enough control of the game. In the first half we were better, more secure. The entry of Rivaldinho cost us, but in general the team has been good and very strong. 1-1 is a good result and we are happy with the draw. Apart from a few from from Raúl, there weren’t a lot of clear chances. They did have one but Iago did well. Dinamo is capable of scoring and creating so we will have to be very good at the San Mamés. We are going to make it very difficult for them to go through at our stadium. I am happy to be able to come back and start in a game like this. I have worked very hard to prove that I deserve a role in the team.”

Iago Herrerin

“The field was not in the best condition for us, but the result was just. It showed that they have already played two weeks of league matches and we have only played in preseason games. We must already forget this result. We have a week to recover and we play again on Thursday at the San Mames. Winning that game is our focus.”

  • For the Rivaldinho goal, which was a bit of a screamer granted, do you think Kepa would have got a hand on it? Don’t want to be too hard on Herrerin but it did fly straight over his head…

    • Sometimes with goals like that they are just amazing and you have to appreciate them. Herrerin definitely wasn’t anticipating a shot and was caught a bit too far forward. Kepa might have been in the same position. You want to see the keeper do better there, but also it was just a great goal. Most would rather give up that goal than one where the defense just completely broke down.
