Alex Remiro Joins SD Huesca On Loan For The 2017-2018 Season

When Athletic Club began preseason training there were officially 30 players under new manager Cuco Ziganda. While he did say that he had no preconceived number of players that he wanted to comprise his team, it was clear that at least a handful would have to leave to lighten the load. There have been rumors swirling around several players who could be making their exit but so far all has been quiet. On Friday that officially changed when a rumored move was finally confirmed.

Athletic Club has announced that Alex Remiro has joined SD Huesca on loan for the 2017-2018 season and is expected to featured as the starting keeper for the Segunda club. It was clear that the 22-year-old was not going to be able to beat out Kepa Arrizabalaga and Iago Herrerin so the club decided the best move was a loan where he could play regular minutes.

This move has been talked about for several weeks now, with some believing that it could have been announced when the team was in Switzerland. However, there were a few details that had to be worked out first. Iago Herrerin was vocal last year about not wanting to be a backup and Ziganda had to convince him to stay. If he refused to be the backup keeper, the club would have kept Remiro for that role. This loan move confirms that Herrerin has agreed to his place in the team.

SD Huesca is a great landing spot for Remiro. They are one of the strongest teams in the Segunda and expected to make a strong run at promotion to the top flight. They have been in need of a keeper and Remiro’s arrival will solidify that position for the club. The 22-year-old is expected to be the starting keeper this season, meaning he will get to play plenty of football as he looks to make his case for next year’s first team at Athletic.
