Ziganda: I Think We Were Very Good Defensively
Athletic Club played Fenerbahce to a scoreless draw on Monday which ended their Festival of the Alps in the country of Switzerland. Aritz Aduriz did have a chance to put the Lions on the board with an early penalty, but sent his shot wide of the goal. After the game Cuco Ziganda spoke to the media and said that he liked how his team played despite the lack of goals, recognizing that they created plenty of scoring chances.“I like the fact that the team has scored a lot of goals, but today we were not able to do so. We did have four or five clear chances and I believe we deserved to win the game. On other days we would have scored some of these changes. In this sense, I liked the team’s disposition and how we played. Football has two aspects, offensive and defensive and it’s played with and without the ball. If you want to be complete you have to play with and without the ball.”
Ziganda went on to say that Athletic handled adversity very well and that the defensive effort was the best he has seen so far this summer. He is happy with how the trip to Switzerland went and is now turning his attention to next week’s game against Dinamo Bucuresti.
“We started the game very well, forcing them into their own half, but there were moments, especially in the first half, when we struggled. We fought through those times, gathered ourselves, and were much better than we were against Basel. I think we were very good defensively because they practically had no chances. I am happy with the work and mentality of everyone on this trip. We have a magnificent match coming up and now we just need to adjust and improve a bit more, which is what we want.”
Athletic Club will return to Bilbao on Tuesday and will be back in action on Friday when they will travel to take on Club Brugge. The Lions will play their first official game of the season on 27 July when they will do battle with Dinamo Bucuresti in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier. With just over a week until that meeting, every single day of training is as vital as ever.
