Jesus Areso Says Goodbye To Osasuna After Dramatic Move To Athletic Club

Jesus Areso has been the talk of the Basque Country for nearly a week now. The Spain U18 standout chose to leave Osasuna after Athletic Club paid his buyout clause which has resulted in immense anger from Osasuna. Areso, who has already spent time at Lezama, took to Twitter on Sunday to say goodbye to Osasuna and the fans, while also saying that he hopes that in time everyone will come to accept his move.

“After five years at Osasuna I have only words of thanks for the people that have surrounded me…teammates, coaches, everyone on the Tajonar staff. They have helped me grow as a footballer and as a person. I know that this decision is difficult for many Osasuna fans to understand, but I hope that in time they will come to understand it. I will always carry Osasuna in my hear. I wish the club the best of luck in the future and I hope that you will soon return to the Primera which is the place that Osasuna belongs. A hug. Jesus Areso.”

Due to Athletic’s Club Basque-only policy, making big transfer signings is very difficult. It is the moves to sign players like Areso that make the difference in Bilbao. The right-back is one of the most exciting young players in his position and will be given the chance to start under Gaizka Garitano at Bilbao Athletic. He was set to spend the summer training with Osasuna’s first team, which certainly puts his potential into perspective.

Areso just turned 18 and has been a regular face in Spain’s U18 squad. While seen as a typical style right-back, he has improved his passing greatly over the last few years and has started to provide even more when pushing up into attack. As he continues to become more of a well-rounded footballer, Areso will prove to be great competition at Bilbao Athletic for Jon Agirrezabala and Jon Sillero, while also providing Athletic with yet another prospect for the first team.
