Alex Berenguer Asked Osasuna To Sell Him To Athletic Club A Few Months Ago

The past few days have been full of drama in the city of Bilbao. After Athletic Club paid the release clause to sign Osasuna starlet Jesus Areso, the Navarrese side publicly announced that they were severing their relationship with their rivals. Furthermore, they made it clear that they would no longer negotiate selling any player to Athletic, including Alex Berenguer who has been on Athletic’s radar for over a year now. The 22-year-old is now trapped in the middle of the drama, but has made his dream clear to his current club.

According to a report from Robert Basic of El CorreoBerenguer officially asked Osasuna to sell him to Athletic a few months ago, saying that he wanted to continue his career at the San Mames. By January he had agreed to personal terms with Athletic for a four-year contract earning €1.2 million per year and was also looking for houses in the city of Bilbao.

All of this was, of course, before the drama started. Now, if Athletic wants to sign Berenguer they will have to pay his €9 million release clause which is something that the Lions have firmly stated that they do not want to do. Just a few months ago a new suitor showed up when Napoli informed Osasuna that they were interested in signing the 22-year-old. The Italians have said that they will offer up to €7 million for him and Berenguer has also now agreed to person terms with Napoli as well.

Berenguer’s dream was to join Athletic Club this summer. In fact, he had told family and very close friends that he would be a Lion when the new season started. That dream now looks impossible with Osasuna refusing to negotiate the transfer and Athletic unwilling to pay his release clause. If things continue in this manner, the young winger will likely join Napoli where Osasuna claims they will demand an anti-Athletic clause be inserted into his contract to deter the Italians attempting to sell him to their rivals in the future. For now, the 22-year-old is just waiting to find out what his future holds.
