The city of Bilbao was struck with sadness several weeks ago when it was revealed that Yeray had suffered a relapse in his battle with testicular cancer. The defender had undergone surgery the previous season and Doctors elected not to perform chemotherapy in hopes that everything had been taken care of. The relapse meant that the 22-year-would need to have chemotherapy and he has been ruled out of action until at least the middle of September. Despite this being a difficult journey, his teammates were not going to let him face it alone.
On Friday Athletic Club revealed that every single member of the first team squad had shaved their heads in support of their teammate. The players came up with the idea themselves and everyone agreed that they should do it.
Oscar De Marcos told reporters that Yeray was not aware that it was going to happen, but that they had been planning it for some time. They wanted to surprise Yeray and, needless to say, he certainly did not see it coming. All of the players gathered together for pictures with the young defender to show their support, love, and to give him as much strength as possible as he faces this trying time. De Marcos went on to say that “This isn’t just to show support for Yeray, but for everyone that is facing this. You have support here”.
Yeray has been training on his own while undergoing chemotherapy and Athletic Club Doctor Josean Lekue says that he believes the 22-year-old may be able to join his teammates in the coming weeks. He will not be cleared to resume regular football until at least the middle of September. Those around Yeray have said that he has been in a strong mood and seems to be doing well. Doctor Lekue added that his treatment is right on schedule and that there have been no complications.
