Urtzi Iriondo has already competed in over 50 Segunda matches in the last two seasons but that number is going to grow quite a bit this year. After spending last season on loan at Elche, the left-back has one again left Athletic Club on loan, this time joining recently relegated side Granada. On Thursday he was officially presented as a Granada player and took the time to speak to the press. The 22-year-old said he had other options, but is really excited to join the club for the upcoming campaign.
“I am very excited to join Granada. I promise hard work, humility, and commitment. I had other options, but I chose to join Granada because they are doing things right and the project is very exciting. The interest they have shown towards me has been fundamental in deciding to come here. I hope to help the club earn promotion above all else and the key to achieving success is unity.”
Iriondo’s previous two seasons in the Segunda were tough. He was part of two straight relegations, once with Bilbao Athletic two years ago and then again with Elche the following campaign. He says that it was difficult to go through but that he grew a lot as an individual and that Granada has plans to earn promotion which will make things very different.
“I consider myself as fast player who likes to defend, aggressive, someone who can bring the ball forward, and above all a team player. My last two seasons have not been very positive, but they have helped for my to grow a lot individually. You learn a lot from the bad, but this year we will have the goals and other ideas. I’m really looking forward to the season. Competition? It is in every team and that is good. Internal competition is good for the lock room and for all the players. The club is working well and the important thing is to be united and compete and work day to day to have the chance to play.
Athletic’s hope is that Urtzi Iriondo will feature as Granada’s starting left-back, but he will have to earn that role. The 22-year-old has long been considered an option to join the Athletic first team and this season he will have a perfect opportunity to show that he is ready for Primera football. Granada will be looking to return to the first division as soon as possible and Iriondo could play a big role in achieving that goal.
