Athletic Club Players Begin Annual Medical Checkups

Every year when players return from summer vacation they have to go through a strenuous medical checkup to determine that they are healthy to resume football activities. All Athletic players will report to Lezama on Monday to start their preseason training, but some players have already undergone their medical checkups. All available players will have their medicals this week, except for those who are still on leave.

On Friday, a handful of players completed their medicals and, in the process, showcased Athletic’s New Balance training shirt for the 2017-2018 season. Those players are as follows: Ander Iturraspe, Mikel Balenziaga, Benat, Inigo Lekue, Oscar De Marcos, Javi Eraso, Unai Lopez, Ager Aketxe, Mikel Vesga, Unai Simon, Eneko Boveda, Xabi Etxeita, Kike Sola, Raul Garcia, Aritz Aduriz, and Mikel Rico. The tests were conducted by the IMQ Zorrotzaurre Clinic, who have been the official sponsor of Athletic for nearly 20 years.

According to the club’s breakdown for the week, the rest of the medicals should take place on Monday. Cuco Ziganda will then give a press conference, followed by taking team and individual photos. The most exciting part of Monday’s itinerary is the fact that Athletic Club will also be unveiling their New Balance kits for the upcoming season. There have been a few leaked images of different designs, but nothing has been confirmed or denied to this point.

After training for a week, Athletic will travel to Switzerland on 10 July to take part in the Festival of the Alps. They will play their first preseason friendly on 12 July against Club Brugge, followed by two other matches in Switzerland against FC Sion and Fenerbahce. The new season will officially begin on 27 July when the Lions play the first leg of the Europa League qualifier.
