Kepa Arrizabalaga is one of the most talented young goalkeepers in all of football. Last year the 22-year-old was promoted to the Athletic first team and it didn’t take long for him to overtake Gorka Iraizoz for the starting role. His impressive season coupled with a great showing with Spain’s U21 team has brought interest from Real Madrid, but it doesn’t look like he will be making an exit.
During an interview with AthleticTV, President Josu Urrutia said that Kepa wants to stay at Athletic and that the two sides have been working on a contract renewal.
“Kepa wants to stay with us and we want him to stay as well. We have been talking about his renewal and the matter is being handled with normality. When something concrete is finished or an agreement is reached, we will notify the public like always. Kepa had a great year with us even though he was injured for a few months. I would put him in the group of young stars with Laporte, Inaki Williams, Yeray, and now Vesga, Aketxe, Lekue, and Sabin Merino. Each has shown their stuff. Kepa’s goal is to stay here for many years and that is our goal too.”
Kepa’s current deal is set to expire next year and holds a €30 million release clause. The keeper recently admitted that he will sign a renewal when he returns from international duty with Spain’s U21 team. Reports claim that his new contract will run through 2022 and contain a release clause somewhere near €50 million.
