Inigo Cordoba Extends His Contract With Athletic Club Until 2021

Inigo Cordoba is one of the most exciting young talents at Athletic Club and last year he really turned a corner to make a name for himself at the reserve team. In 32 games he managed to score four goals and was an unquestioned starter under Cuco Ziganda. It was recently announced that he would spend the preseason with the first team and it now looks like his future will in fact remain at his boyhood club.

On Friday Athletic Club announced that Inigo Cordoba had extended his contract with the Basque giants until 2021. The deal also raised his release clause to €30 million as he is now one step closer to becoming a first team player.

Athletic have been pursuing Osasuna winger Alex Berenguer for over a year now and have refused to raise their bid for the 21-year-old. It now looks like Napoli will be the ones to sign the winger, while Athletic has decided to put their faith in Cordoba. The Lezama product’s renewal seems to suggest that he will be the one to strengthen the wing position at the San Mames instead of entering into a bidding war with Napoli over Berenguer.

Those who have followed Cordoba know that he is a very traditional winger that fits Athletic’s system very well. He has a high work rate, can create goals, and has shown a knack for putting himself in scoring positions. Additionally, he is a left-footed player which is something that Athletic has prioritized over the last few years. The 20-year-old will still need to earn a place in the first team during the preseason, but his renewal shows that Athletic has faith that he can become a contributor at the San Mames.
