Athletic’s love affair with Alex Berenguer has lasted for over a year now and the Lions are still hopeful of signing the Osasuna winger. After having bids rejected last summer and last January, the Basques submitted an offer of €4 millions plus €1 million in variables a few weeks ago and have told Osasuna that they do not plan on raising it. Napoli has also been following the 21-year-old, but two new clubs have come into the picture.
Both Italian clubs are said to have only spoken to Osasuna through representatives and that no bids were officially launched. To this day, Athletic’s offer mentioned above remains the only official bid so far for Berenguer. Napoli have told Osasuna that they are willing to offer €5 million plus variables, but they have yet to actually submit anything to the Navarrese club. As of right now Osasuna remains firm in asking for the player’s release clause which is set at €9 million.
Alex Berenguer has caught attention due to the fact that he can play anywhere along the left flank and has shown the ability to be an absolute spark with the ball at his feet. His pace and all control can cause real problems for defenders and he isn’t afraid of any defender. This versatility would be very valuable for Athletic Club who have made him one of their top two targets this summer along with former teammate Mikel Merino. Osasuna knows that they will have to sell due to financial problems but they are waiting for the highest bid possible. It was recently reported that Athletic would be willing to send a player on loan to Osasuna to facilitate the move, which has peaked President Luis Sabalza’s interest, but they have yet to accept the offer.
