Gorka Santamaria Will Leave On Loan Again This Summer

Gorka Santamaria was a mainstay in Cuco Ziganda’s Bilbao Athletic team that earned promotion to the Segunda a few years ago. However, after the Cachorros were relegated back to the Segunda B, it became necessary for the striker to leave on loan in order to continue his development. Last summer he joined Cadiz for the upcoming season, but things did not go as planned. His time at Cadiz is now over, but he will leave on loan once again this summer.

According to a report from Pako Ruiz of DEIA, Athletic and Ziganda told Santamaria back in May that he would not have a role in the first team and that they will send him back to the Segunda on loan for the upcoming season.

The most important thing at this point is for the 21-year-old to play regular minutes. He only competed in 16 matches with Cadiz last season and that just won’t do for a player who is trying to prove that he deserves a place at the San Mames. The Lions will be listening to offers this summer but they will only entertain the ones that guarantee playing time for the striker.

In addition, Santamaria only has one year remaining on his contract. Athletic doesn’t want to let him leave for free because they still believe that he can develop into a strong candidate for the first team, but there are currently no negotiations regarding a contract renewal. Next season will, in truth, be Santamaria’s last chance to make his case for the first team and his Athletic career. As of now there is no word on which Segunda clubs are interested in signing the Lezama product, but he is expected to have several suitors just like last summer.
