Going into last season Ager Aketxe didn’t know what his future would hold. The young midfielder was still recovering from a torn ACL and was going to have to prove that he still deserved a place at Athletic Club. After joining Cadiz on loan in January, he has more than shown that he can be an important player at the San Mames and the Lions are ready to reward him with a new contract.
According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Athletic Club have begun negotiations with Aketxe regarding a contract extension and the two sides are expected to get someone finalized as soon as possible.
Aketxe’s current deal is set to expire in 2018 and Athletic has no intention of letting that happen. The 23-year-old is definitely part of Cuco Ziganda’s plans moving forward and the club wants to tie him up to a long-term deal as soon as possible. On the other side, Aketxe was raised at Lezama and has always dreamed of being an Athletic player. He also wants to extend his contract and be a part of the first team for the upcoming season. Clubs like Eibar and Leganes would love to sign him on loan, but those close to the situation expect him to be a part of Ziganda’s squad.
With Cadiz being eliminated from the promotional playoffs, Aketxe is now enjoying his summer vacation before Athletic begins preseason training on 3 July. Once he returns, he and the club will get to work on finalizing the details of the new contract with hopes of officially signing the renewal before the season begins. It will be interesting to see what release clause is placed on the 23-year-old after an exciting year at Cadiz. Regardless, his future is at the San Mames and he is looking forward to becoming a Primera player at Athletic Club.
