Kike Sola Could Have His Contract Rescinded By Athletic Club

Kike Sola’s career at Athletic Club did not pan out the way he had hoped. After joining the Lions in 2013 he failed to hold down a regular role in the squad and spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, Getafe, and Numancia. The striker only has one year left on his contract so this summer will go a long way to determining what his future will look like and whether or not he will remain an Athletic player.

According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Athletic is willing to rescind Kike Sola’s contract so that he can leave the club for free and decide where he will play next. However, Cuco Ziganda will ultimately be the one who will make the decision regarding the striker’s future at the San Mames.

Cuco Ziganda is very familiar with Kike Sola, having given him his first team debut with Osasuna back in 2007. However, that may not be enough to keep the striker in Bilbao. When the players return to begin preseason training on 3 July, Ziganda will sit down with Sola and discuss his future at the club. Sources claim that the manager could allow the 31-year-old to spend the preseason with the squad in order to prove himself.

Despite Ziganda’s familiarity with Kike Sola, it looks like the writing is on the wall. Athletic will have a plethora of options sitting behind Aritz Aduriz for the striker role and Sola would find it nearly impossible to get minutes. In the end, Ziganda will have to be the one to make the decision about what will happen with Kike Sola, but the club is ready to allow him to leave for free even though he has one year remaining on his contract. Unless something changes, the 31-year-old will be leaving Bilbao this summer.
