Inigo Ruiz De Galarreta was once a youth star at Lezama and destined to one day become a regular face at the San Mames. After joining the youth system when he was just 10 years old, he worked his way up the ranks to eventually make his first team debut at the age of 18. However, things didn’t go as planned from that point on. The midfielder suffered two serious ACL injuries which completely turned around his career.
From 2013 to 2016 he had three separate loan spells at Mirandes, Zaragoza, and Leganes where he showed flashes but wasn’t able to truly stand out. Last summer the club decided to let him leave for free to join a club fully and that has seemingly put his career back on the right path. The 23-year-old signed with Numancia in the Segunda and went on to play an absolutely vital role in the team. Galarreta functioned as the engine and driving force in the midfield while featuring in 37 matches and scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists.
Now that Galarreta has stayed healthy and is playing at a high level again he may finally get his chance at Primera football. He has worked very hard to continue improving his game and his football IQ has never been in question. The Lezama product always grew up dreaming of playing at the San Mames and putting on the Athletic shirt, but his best chance may actually be with a local rival.
In the middle of his terrific season with Numancia Galarreta signed a one year extension with the club that saw his release clause set at €800,000. That fee is certainly an affordable price for Real Sociedad if they truly want to sign the 23-year-old. It is yet to be seen if Athletic’s biggest rival will actually make the move for the midfielder. While he has shown that he can play at a high level and has stayed healthy, there will likely always be questions about his durability after two tragic knee injuries.
Some fans have already begun to ask why Athletic is not linked with a move for their former starlet, especially given his low asking price. The answer to that question likely lies in the fact that there is an abundance of depth in the Athletic midfield. In truth there just doesn’t seem to be a place for Inigo Ruiz De Galarreta at the San Mames, but that won’t keep fans from accepting the fact that he is being linked with a switch to the Anoeta.
