Leganes Wants To Sign Athletic Club Pair Ager Aketxe And Javi Eraso
Athletic Club’s squad is getting a bit full. With players returning from loan there just won’t be room for everybody in the team and that means that some will have to leave the club. New manager Cuco Ziganda will have some big decisions to make before preseason begins on 3 July. That being said, Leganes manager Asier Garitano says that they are patiently waiting to talk to the Lions about players that they could potentially sign.
In a recent interview with AS, Garitano admitted that he has always had a great relationship with Athletic and that he is interested in signing Ager Aketxe and Javi Eraso, but he knows it won’t be easy.
“Since I first came here I have always had players joining the squad from Athletic. We will see if it will happen again. We have not called them yet, we have to wait because we’ve had some changes here, but we will call them and talk when preseason gets closer. If there are options for players to leave that we would like, then it could happen. Athletic has a lot of players. Javi Eraso knows Leganes but he has a year left on his contract and trained with Ziganda at Bilbao Athletic. We will talk to Athletic and see what Javi thinks, but I don’t see it as a simple deal. Aketxe returned from an injury recently, but we will have to wait to see how he finishes the season, returns to Athletic, and what they decide they want to do with the player. We are interested in both.”
Many have predicted that Eraso will leave the club this summer due to an overabundance of midfielders in the squad, especially if the Lions sign Mikel Merino. On the other hand, most believe that Aketxe has earned his place in the team after a terrific loan spell at Cadiz. Still, it will be up to Cuco Ziganda to prepare to the squad for the upcoming season and nothing is certain at this point. Garitano was also asked about Ziganda taking over as the Athletic manager and had high praise for his friend.
“He knows the club like Zidane knows Madrid and Luis Enrique knows Barcelona. He knows everything – football, the Primera, the first team, the press, and Bilbao. He has a lot of qualities that should lead to success.”
