Once Cuco Ziganda was promoted to become the manager of Athletic Club, it left a massive hole at Bilbao Athletic. The board has been working hard to fill the void as quickly as possible, but they also want to make the wisest move for the club and Lezama as a whole. Several names have been linked with the position, but it now looks like someone has finally been chosen.
According to reports in Bilbao, including sources close to this website, Gaizka Garitano has accepted the offer to become the new manager of Bilbao Athletic and is expected to be announced after minor details have been worked out. Furthermore, Marca is reporting that Garitano’s contract will be for two seasons.
Last week it was reported that Athletic had offered the job to Garitano and were patiently awaiting his decision. After thinking it over, sources say that he has accepted the offer and will be announced once both sides work out the intricacies of the contract. Garitano is said to be excited about taking over a project that is based more on development instead of results, as well as returning to coach at his boyhood club. The former Bilbao Athletic player wants to help current Lezama footballers reach their dream of one day playing at the San Mames.
Garitano comes to Lezama in a nearly identical way to Cuco Ziganda back in 2011. The 41-year-old has coached at Eibar, Real Valladolid, and Deportivo La Coruna in the Primera but will now be taking a figurative step back into the Segunda B. The manager has spent the last few years in very stressful jobs where success was basically demanded. Being able to just focus on developing young talent now will be a nice change for Garitano who has always been seen as an instructional coach. There is no timetable on when Athletic will make the official announcement, but it is expected to happen soon.
