After missing out on Alex Berenguer last summer, Athletic Club has come back in full force with the hope of bringing the winger to the San Mames. So far Osasuna has refused to negotiate for anything less than the €9 million release clause, but the Lions are hopeful that they can wait out their rivals who will be forced to sell players this summer due to their poor financial situation. Despite the slow moving negotiations, there is some major news for Athletic.
According to a recent report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Alex Berenguer has reached a contract agreement with Athletic Club for four seasons in preparation for the potential transfer.
The report goes on to say that Athletic have been in regular contact with Berenguer’s agent after the two sides tried to make the move happen back in January. They agreed to be patient until the summer and come back with another offer, which has kept the pressure on their neighbors. While the Lions and Osasuna are still far apart on a transfer fee, Berenguer has already verbally agreed to a four-year contract with Athletic which was completed a few weeks ago.
Additionally, the 21-year-old has informed Osasuna that he does not want to play in the Segunda next season and wants the club to facilitate a move this summer. The fact that he has already agreed to personal terms shows that he favors a move to Bilbao, which could be the key to finalizing a deal with Osasuna. Right now, the Navarrese club is still demanding the full €9 million release clause while Athletic is only offering €4 million plus another €1 million in variables. Napoli is also interested in the winger but are yet to submit an official bid. If the Italians do not make an offer of their own, Athletic’s patience and Berenguer’s request to leave may eventually force Osasuna into selling their prized winger for less than their asking price.
