Athletic Club has been pushing to sign Osasuna winger Alex Berenguer for over a year now with no luck. Their neighbors do not want to sell their starlet, especially to a local rival, while the Lions seem to be refusing to meet his €9 million release clause. The two clubs have been in negotiations since April and haven’t been able to come to an agreement and now it appears as though the talks will take a hiatus.
In a recent interview with Noticias de Navarra, Osasuna President Luis Sabalza revealed that the two clubs were going to be taking a break and would pick back up negotiations next month. “We will start talking with Athletic again on 1 July”, he told reporters.
Athletic’s latest offer for the 21-year-old was a €5 million bid plus incentives, but Osasuna still want the full €9 million release clause. For now, this is a number that the Lions refuse to meet. Still, Osasuna is in financial disarray and need to sell players to help balance this books. Athletic hopes that this will eventually force them to sell the prized winger.
Meanwhile, Athletic is not the only club that is interested in signing Alex Berenguer. Italian side Napoli also wants to sign the 21-year-old and are believed to be ready to offer €6 million plus an additional €1 million in variables. This has some Athletic fans worried because Osasuna would much rather to sell to an outside club instead of their rival neighbors. However, Sabalza also said in the same interview that they are asking the full release clause from Napoli as well. “We have already had a first contact with Napoli and we told them through representatives that we want the player’s release clause, which is €9 million.”
