Ager Aketxe has been in absolutely incredible form since joining Cadiz on loan in January. The midfielder’s ACL injury is now a thing of the past and he is playing the best football of his career. On Sunday he scored an unbelievable free kick that was closer to the midfield line than it was to the penalty box and that strike helped Cadiz move to fifth in the Segunda table. Following the game, the 23-year-old said that he is playing with a ton of confidence and that he is happy to be helping the team with goals.“I’m happy with how I’ve played lately. I’m shooting more because I have the confidence to score and that is something that works for me. I’m glad the shot went in because it helped us go to 5th in the table. Luckily all went well. It is never easy to win, but we are close to the goal and we have to continue adding points. Sunday’s opponent is a rival that is playing well and can cause problems for us. We have two games left and can’t afford to drop many points.”
Since Cuco Ziganda was named as the Athletic manager, many have speculated that Aketxe will be a part of the first team squad next season. When asked about this, the Lezama product said that he isn’t thinking about his future at the moment and is only focused on helping Cadiz earn promotion to the Primera.
“I am better now than when I first arrived because I am helping the team with more goals. At first it was difficult because playing here is different than what I am accustomed to at Athletic. But gradually I have adapted and I am better. Right now I’m only thinking about Cadiz. I want to help the club enter the playoff and try to earn promotion to the Primera.”
Since joining Cadiz in January, Aketxe has played in 14 matches and has scored 4 goals. He has featured mainly as the central attacking midfielder, which just so happens to be a role that needs depth at Athletic Club. The 23-year-old has done a great job of making his case for the first team next season. There are two matches remaining in the Segunda season and, as things stand right now, Cadiz would enter the promotional playoffs which means that Aketxe could have a few more games remaining on his loan deal.
