Athletic Club Raise Bid For Alex Berenguer To €5 Million

Athletic Club’s year-long pursuit of Alex Berenguer seems to have hit a standstill. After missing out on the 21-year-old last summer, the Lions came back in January with an offer of €4 million that was immediately rejected. A few months later Athletic submitted the same bid once again and Osasuna told their rivals that Berenguer could only be bought for his €9 million release clause. Athletic has seemed unwilling to offer any more, but that just recently changed.

According to several media outlets in the Basque Country, Athletic has officially submitted a bid of €5 million plus variables for Alex Berenguer, though no one is reporting whether or not Osasuna has rejected it yet.

Those close to the situation seem to think that €9 million is far too much for a young player that only has one year of experience in the Primera. Still, that may be what it costs to secure the singing of the talented winger. On the other hand, Athletic is aware that Osasuna is in financial turmoil and are hoping that they can force their neighbors into selling Berenguer for less than his release clause.

Athletic isn’t the only club interested in Alex Berenguer. Recently reports surfaced that Napoli was eyeing a move for the winger and that the Italians were willing to offer €6 million plus incentives for his services. That potential bid has not been officially submitted, but it does show that the Lions do have competition. If Athletic is serious about bringing Berenguer to the San Mames this summer they may have to offer the entire clause, or make something else happen fast, before someone else comes in and convinces Osasuna to sell.
