With Kuko Ziganda having recently been named the new Athletic Club manager, there is now a hole at Lezama. Bilbao Athletic is without a manager and the club is trying to make the best decision to fill that role. Now it appears as though Preisdent Josu Urrutia has a target in sight.
According to a report from El Correo, Urrutia wants Gaizka Garitano to become the new Bilbao Athletic manager and will try to convince him to take the job.
Garitano was born in Bilbao and grew up at Lezama. Even though he never reached the first team, he does have a rich history in Basque football playing for Eibar, Real Sociedad, and Alaves. He went on to coach Eibar and most recently was the manager of Deportivo La Coruña where he was let go due to a weak showing in La Liga.
Athletic is targeting Garitano for the same reasons they hired Ziganda back in 2011. He is an experienced coach, does well with you, has the potential to one day coach the first team, and knows the Lezama system. It will be up to Garitano to decide whether or not he wants the job because on the surface it would be a step back in his career, much like it was for Ziganda. Still, there will be other strong candidates if Garitano declines the offer.
