Javi Eraso’s future at Athletic Club has been in serious question over the last six months. After playing a regular role in the team last season, his minutes dropped significantly and many sources believe that he will leave this summer. If Eraso is put on the market, he is expected to have plenty of suitors in the Primera as several clubs are looking to strengthen their midfields. However, there is one club already asking about the 27-year-old and it is a familiar face.
Eraso was raised at Lezama but after not being able to make the jump from Bilbao Athletic to the first team, he left to join Leganes in 2013. After two very successful seasons he was able to make his return to his boyhood club. Now, with one year remaining on his contract, it will be up to new manager Cuco Ziganda to decide whether or not Eraso has a place in the squad next season.
There will be plenty of competition for the 27-year-old, however. Mikel Vesga and Ager Aketxe have made strong cases for a place in the squad while on loan this season, while Unai Lopez, who is also on loan at Leganes, has had a lot of success under Ziganda in the past. If Athletic do decide to let Eraso go, there is a chance that the two parties could mutually terminate his contract in the same way that saw Ibai Gomez leave last summer to join Alaves. With preseason likely beginning early this summer, Athletic could make a quick decision with Javi Eraso.
