With the season having finally come to a close all eyes have been on Ernesto Valverde. For months now the Athletic manager has been linked with a move away from the Basque giants with FC Barcelona interested in making hims their next manager. Txingurri has remained silent about the rumors so far, but on Tuesday there was finally clarity on the situation.
On Tuesday, Athletic Club officially announced that Ernesto Valverde would not be continuing as the manager of the first team and that he would be making his exit.
Fans have been expecting this for quite some time and it doesn’t come as a surprise. According to reports, Valverde will sign a 2-3 year contract with FC Barcelona and the deal will be announced next Monday. Barcelona still have the Copa del Rey final left to play and, if they win that match against Alaves, it would place Athletic Club into the qualifying round of the Europa League next season.
Athletic’s season is over, but they will likely not have much of a break. If they are placed into the Europa League qualifying round they will play their first game on 27 July. Because of this, many expect the club to announce the new manager very quickly. According to those close to the situation and numerous media outlets, Bilbao Athletic manager Cuco Ziganda will be the one to take over control. President Josu Urrutia and Ernesto Valverde will give a joint press conference tomorrow, 24 May, at noon in Bilbao.
