Gorka Iraizoz’s time at Athletic Club has officially come to an end. Earlier this month it was announced that he would not be continuing with the Basque giants and the fans were able to give him a proper sendoff following the last match of the year at the San Mames. The 36-year-old keeper made it clear that he wasn’t really planning on retiring and it now looks like he is close to making a decision on his new destination.
According to reports across Spain, Iraizoz is close to making a return to Espanyol where he played from 2002-2007 before returning to Athletic where he has played for the last decade.
Those close to the situation say that Iraizoz doesn’t want to shake things up to much at his age and prefers a familiar destination. Espanyol would certainly provide that and the Catalans are in need of a strong, experienced keeper to help them take another step forward next season. The club President believes that they will make the signing happen and that it is just a matter of time.
Gorka Iraizoz leaves Athletic after a decade which saw him compete in 392 matches for the Basques. He was a Captain and represented the club wonderfully both on and off the pitch. The idea of him lining up against the Lions next season seems odd, but the 36-year-old says that Athletic Club will always be his family. Kepa Arrizabalaga, who took the starting role from Iraizoz this season, will continue to lead the defense next season and is expected to sign a contract extension soon.
