Ernesto Valverde has been the main topic of discussion in Bilbao over the last few months. The Athletic manager is out of contract at the end of the season and is believed to be the top choice to take over at FC Barcelona with Luis Enrique stepping down this summer. There have been reports claiming that Valverde has agreed to a two-year deal with the Catalans, but nothing has been made official so far.
Following Athletic’s last match of the season, many expected Valverde to clarify the rumors and announce that he would be officially leaving Bilbao. However, he refused to discuss his future saying that he will make an announcement this week.
“This is not a sad ending for me because I don’t know if it is my end at Athletic Club. You will find out this week, don’t worry. Do not rush me, you will know and I will reveal everything. This week will be the time to think, reflect, and make a decision.”
Despite Valverde’s secrecy, those close to the situation still believe that he is going to accept the offer from Barcelona and leave Athletic Club this summer. If that does happen, Bilbao Athletic manager Cuco Ziganda is expected to take his place in charge of the first team.
