Athletic Club fell 3-1 to Atletico Madrid on Sunday which saw them officially finish seventh in the La Liga table. The Lions will now have to wait for Barcelona to hopefully win the Copa del Rey next weekend to put the Basques into the qualifying round of the European competition. Inaki Williams

“We wanted to close out Europe, but we couldn’t do it and now we have to depend on someone else. We are all going to be behind Barca and hopefully they win the Cup so we can be in Europe next year like in previous years. In the first half we played poorly and couldn’t do anything, but in the second half we began to climb. Going into the Calderon and giving up two goals it is very difficult to get back in it. Now we have to wait until next weekend.”

Iker Muniain

“They are a very difficult rival, the third in the league, and they showed that today. We are angry to not get what we wanted, but they also wanted to say goodbye to the Calderon so we knew it wouldn’t be easy. Matches at this time of the year are life and death and it’s a shame because we deserved top six. We still have to recognize that it was a great year and now we have to wait for Barcelona to hopefully win the Cup. On a personal level I’m happy to have regained my best form and now I can rest. Did Valverde tell us goodbye? No, he made it clear that we will have to wait to know his decision.”

Oscar De Marcos

“I knew Celta was winning and then I turned and saw bottles being thrown on the bench. I could only imagine what happened. I’d say this season we were a seven of eight out of ten. In the first half we were inconsistent, but in the second half we earned a lot of points. It’s historical how many points we earned. We fought until the last day and that makes me very proud. I go into the summer with my head held high.”
