It hasn’t been an easy year for Sabin Merino. The Athletic forward has missed a lot of time due to a pubis injury which saw him play in less than 20 games this season. Last year his incredible form had fans beginning to think that he could become the eventual successor to Aritz Aduriz, but now he is just fighting to play regular minutes again. That being said, there is one club that is interested in signing him this summer.
According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, Greek giants Panathinaikos are interested in making a move for the 25-year-old this summer and believe that his size, scoring ability, and versatility would be a great addition to their current squad.
Before worrying about the possibility of Sabin Merino leaving, it is important to understand his role at Athletic. Ernesto Valverde sees the forward as an important part of the team and would not sell him if he continues at the club. Likewise, Cuco Ziganda, who would take Valverde’s place if he does leave, also has high praise for Merino and would have no desire to offload him this summer. Simply put, Sabin Merino’s place in the squad is absolutely safe.
If Panathinaikos really want to sign the 25-year-old they would have to match his €30 million release clause which seems nearly impossible for the Greek club. The Lezama graduate is dedicated to continuing his career at Athletic and getting back into the regular rotation of players. He has participated in the last few games for the Lions and his pubic problems now seem to be behind him. With the entire summer and preseason to recuperate, Sabin Merino is expected to be back at his best and playing regular football next season.
