Athletic Club 1-1 Leganes: Postgame Player Comments

Athletic Club had a wonderful chance to potentially qualify for the Europe League on Sunday when they hosted Leganes at the San Mames. After going ahead early, the Lions surrendered an equalizer in the second half and were not able to overcome the 1-1 scoreline. Following the game Aritz Aduriz and Xabi Etxeita discussed the result, saying that Leganes made things really difficult for them and that is why they were not able to take all three points. Here is what they had to say:

Aritz Aduriz

“I don’t know about the other results, but we had to win our game and we didn’t do it. Leganes is a team that is used to playing with high pressure and they made things difficult for us. Now we have to go to the Calderon with everything if we want to achieve our goals. Football is nice because it gives us surprises, but that is not always a good thing. The good thing about football is that it is now giving us another chance at the Calderon. We know that some of their players will be missing, but any Atletico player has enough qualify to play well next weekend.”

Xabi Etxeita

“The result is a shame. We had put ourselves ahead and for the most part we controlled the game. But we knew the lead wasn’t safe and that we needed to score another goal. In the second half they made things more difficult and created a few occasions. They scored and form there we couldn’t take back the lead. We knew that we needed another goal, but they took the step forward and pressed us more. Our goal of qualifying for Europe still depends on us which is what we wanted. It will be difficult at the Calderon, but we will give it all we have. I had not played much coming into the game so I was ready to compete. I had a chance and I tried to give it my best. The most important thing is being back in Europe.”
