Mikel San Jose has been one of Athletic’s best players over the last four years and a big reason why the club has been able to qualify for European competition on a regular basis. One day after losing 1-0 to Alaves on the road, San Jose was a special guest on the Fuera de Juego show on Radio Euskadi. He began by discussing the loss, saying that he still believes Athletic is a difficult team to beat.
“Yesterday’s loss to Alaves was an accident. We are in a fantastic moment right now. Against Alaves we lacked accuracy in front of goal. We could have scored two or three goals and taken an advantage in the table, but that didn’t happen. From 1-0 we couldn’t overtake them. We striker, but they played very well. The game escaped us after the first half. We are committed to achieving our goal of qualifying for Europe again. We are very optimistic and I have no doubt that Athletic can get the remaining six points.”
The midfielder also commented that he doesn’t see an easier final schedule for Athletic’s table rivals. San Jose also touched on the fact that Sunday will be Gorka Iraizoz’s final match and that it will be difficult to see the keeper leave when the season ends.
“I don’t think Villarreal and Real Sociedad have an easier remaining schedule than we do. We are a good moment and we are a team that is hard to beat. It will be a special game with the farewell for Iraizoz. We have lost a Captain three years in a role and it leaves a hole in the locker room. The team hopes that Valverde will continue here and we are waiting to find out what will happen. The way life has been with this coaching staff every single day is the best I have experienced at Athletic Club.”
Athletic Club will play their final home game of the season on Sunday when they host Leganes at the San Mames. The Lions need a win, coupled with a Real Sociedad defeat, to guarantee a top six finish in the La Liga table. Mikel San Jose is expected to be in the starting lineup along with the rest of the regular faces, however, Aymeric Laporte will miss out due to suspension. With only two games remaining, Athletic must be at their very best.
