Alex Berenguer has been linked with a move to Athletic Club for over a year now with the Lions missing out on signing him last summer. They came back in January with an offer of €4 million that was rejected, but now it looks like they may be able to finally get the deal done. As reported earlier in the week, Osasuna and Athletic have begun negotiations over the possible transfer. However, it looks like there will be competition.
According to a new report from Javi Beltran of AS, an English and German club have been scouting the 21-year-old since last October and are said to be interesting in bidding for him when the summer transfer window officially opens. A few weeks back it was reported that Levante, who will earn promotion back to the Primera, were looking at Berenguer as well.
This does pose a problem for Athletic due to the fact that Osasuna does not like selling players to their rivals. Osasuna is in financial turmoil and knows that they will have to sell players like Berenguer this summer and having more suitors would give them the chance to reject offers from Athletic. However, those close to the situation seem to believe that the Lions will get the deal done unless something unforeseen happens.
Due to Osasuna’s relegation, Berenguer’s release clause has fallen back down to €9 million. Athletic seem to believe that they can convince their neighbors to take that number down a bit but the Osasuna Sporting Director continues to refer the Lions to the release clause. If Athletic is serious about signing Alex Berenguer this summer they will need to work quickly or accept the fact that his fee may end up being €9 million. With other interested parties and Osasuna’s dislike of Athletic, it would be in their best interest to try and seal a transfer as quickly as possible.
