Athletic Club has made Osasuna winger Alex Berenguer one of their top transfer targets for the summer after missing out on his last year. This year, the Lions will have an upper hand in their pursuit of the 21-year-old due to the fact that Osasuna has just officially been relegated to the Segunda, making it very difficult for them to hold on to key players, especially young stars.
Last summer Athletic made an offer of €2.5 million plus Kike Sola that was immediately rejected. The Lions came back in January with an offer of €4 million that was turned down as well. After the approach in January, Berenguer’s agent said that “we will talk if Athletic comes back with another offer”. Now, sources close to the situation say that this time around Berenguer will push Osasuna to make the deal happen. He has been loyal to his boyhood club but wants to continue playing in the Primera and has a lot of respect for Athletic.
Athletic wants to get the deal done as soon as possible and that is why these negotiations are beginning so early. Sporting Director Jose Maria Amorrortu doesn’t want a long drawn out process and wants to reach an agreement during these upcoming meetings. Berenguer’s release clause has fallen to €9 million due to Osasuna’s relegation, but the belief is that Athletic will be able to finalize a deal for much less. Berenguer is being monitored by other clubs, namely Levante, who will be promoted back to the Primera for the upcoming season.
