Athletic Club 2-1 Real Betis: Postgame Player Comments

Athletic Club continued their fabulous run of form at home on Thursday night when they defeated Real Betis 2-1. A penalty form Aritz Aduriz opened up the scoring before Iker Muniain’s header doubled the lead. Betis did pull one goal back which led to some late drama, but the Lions were able to hold on to win and climb back to within one point of Villarreal for 5th place in the La Liga table. Following the game, Muniain and Mikel San Jose gave their thoughts on the big win. Here is what they had to say:

Iker Muniain

“I am happy to be scoring again, especially because it helps the team. My goal today helped the team to victory and that is always good. These were three super important points that serve to help us keep pulse with the rivals who are also fighting for Europe. Our rivals aren’t failing and neither are we because we have earned six of six points this week. We had the game more or less under control at 2-0 but their isolated goal caused problems. Everyone was committed to winning and together we achieved the victory. The entire team is playing very well. More points will be needed. Normally 60 points are enough to enter the Europa League, but there are more challenges. We haven’t played well in Vigo recently but we will try to solve that on Sunday.”

Mikel San Jose

“The team is in a good momentum. We will continue to fight for our goal and we want to keep climbing the table. These are three vital points. You have to know how to suffer and that is what we were able to do. This is a week with three games in six days so the important thing is to take it one match at a team and that is what we have been doing. Betis came in from a good win and they made the match very difficult. Our intensity was higher and we are able to create more chances. Now we will prepare for Celta and we need to win again. We are i a fight and every point is important. It will be a difficult game.”
