Cuco Ziganda is the heavy favorite to take over at Athletic Club if Ernesto Valverde makes his exit this summer. Rumors suggest that the Bilbao Athletic manager has already told Josu Urrutia that he will accept the job if offered, but in a recent interview he claimed that has not spoken to the President. According to Ziganda, he has been too focused on the reserve side to have talks right now.
“I am 100% focused on Bilbao Athletic and I am very happy and very entertained with the project of helping the players improve. It requires intense and constant work and I enjoy that training. I am so focused that I have had no time at all to talk with President Urrutia.”
When asked about the improvement of players like Asier Villalibre and Iker Undabarrena, Ziganda was quick to praise all of his players, saying that everyone is doing what it takes to improve and become better footballers.
“I see them all doing things to improve. They understand what their future can hold and we have to believe in every one of them and we do. This is a club that believes in youth and values those that come through the system. At this level, they have to know how to play and compete. This has been an excellent season, no matter what happens. I want to congratulate every one of them.”
Bilbao Athletic current sit six points off of the promotional playoff zone with only three games remaining. Their final matches will see them play clubs in the top six in the table, so reaching the top four will be a daunting task. Regardless, Ziganda believes it has been a successful season no matter how it all ends.
