Iker Undabarrena is one of the pearls of Lezama and has been tapped for the first team for several years now. The midfielder was in line for promotion last summer, but an unfortunate ACL tear forced him out of action for over six months and gave Mikel Vesga the spot in the squad instead. This season saw the 21-year-old return to action and it was clear that he had not missed a step.
Due to his impressive play and continued improvement, Undabarrena is expected to spend the preseason with the first team and fight for a place in the squad. In fact, the Lezama graduate will sit out the remainder of Bilbao Athletic’s season in order to finalize his recovery from the ACL tear and begin preparing for the preseason haul.
In a recent report from El Desmarque Bizkaia it was announced that Undabarrena would sit out the final three games for Bilbao Athletic in order to rest his knee and get ready for the preseason. So far it isn’t known whether or not he has been dealing with any new or recurring pain associated with his recently torn ACL, but it is unlikely that he would sit out the rest of the season purely out of precaution. Still, Bilbao Athletic is not in danger of relegation and it would be nearly impossible for them to finish in the promotional playoff zone of the table.
Despite being one of the best young midfielders in Lezama, it will be very hard for Undabarrena to find a place in the first team next season. Benat, Mikel San Jose, Ander Iturraspe, Mikel Rico, Javi Eraso, and Mikel Vesga are all current sitting in front of the Bilbao Athletic standout and a possible signing of Mikel Merino would add one more name to that list. Regardless, the 21-year-old has already proven that he is ready to take another step forward in his career and, if he can’t secure a place in the first team, he will likely spend next season on loan in the Segunda.
