Huesca Aiming To Sign Mikel Rico During The Summer

Mikel Rico’s time at Athletic Club may be coming to a close. It was a big deal when he made his return to his boyhood club back in 2013 and he had a big role to play early on. Since then he has seen his minutes dwindle and his place in the squad is very much in question with Mikel Vesga playing at a high level while on loan at Sporting Gijon.

Rico currently has a contract until 2018 so it isn’t known what Athletic plan to do with him during the summer transfer window. If they do decide to offload the veteran, he already has a favorable suitor waiting. According to a recent report from Jorge Puyuelo of AS, Huesca wants to sign the 32-year-old this summer.

Huesca’s interest in Rico shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. The midfielder was a part of the club from 2007-2010 before making his move to Granada. He is still held in high esteem by Huesca fans and once mentioned that he would like to return one day. For Mikel Rico, Huesca was the club where he really made a name for himself as a professional footballer.

For now, it doesn’t seem like Huesca would be able to make the move happen on their own. If Athletic do not want to part ways with the veteran, there is no way that Huesca could afford him. However, if Rico pushed for the move himself, the Lions may let him leave for free like they have with other players over the last few years. There is no denying Rico’s experience and value in the dressing room, but the emergence of Mikel Vesga and possible signing of Mikel Merino could force him to say goodbye to the San Mames this summer.
