Mikel Vesga has been an absolute star since moving to Sporting Gijon on loan in January. The midfielder had been promoted to the Athletic first team over the summer, but lack of minutes necessitated a move away to play more consistently. That loan move has seen Vesga gain confidence and the argument can be made that he has been one of the best midfielders in Spain since the winter transfer window. In an interview with Fuera de Juego on Wednesday night, the 24-year-old spoke about his move away from the San Mames.
“I will never forget this half year at Sporting. The important thing is to play regularly and grow little by little. We will see how far I can go and what my future holds. When you go out on loan you have the mentality to return and that is what you work hard for, but right now I’m focused on Sporting. We have a final against Osasuna and it is going to be difficult to win in El Sadar.”
When asked how he thinks Athletic has done this year, Vesga said he doesn’t see any reason why the Lions won’t qualify for Europe yet again. He was also asked about his time under Cuco Ziganda at Bilbao Athletic and had nothing but wonderful things to say.
“I think Athletic are doing very well. They should have no problem achieving their European objective again. My time at Bilbao Athletic? What I learned at Bilbao Athletic taught me how to handle adversity and pressure. Ziganda is a great manager and gave me confidence. My time at Bilbao Athletic has a lot to do with the player I am today.”
Mikel Vesga will return from loan this summer with a guaranteed place in the Athletic Club squad. His form with Sporting has cleared up any questions about his future at the San Mames, but he will have competition. The likes of Benat, Mikel San Jose, Ander Iturraspe, Javi Eraso, and Mikel Rico will all be vying for minutes, and Athletic will be pushing to sign Mikel Merino over the summer. Regardless, Vesga has proven that he can play at a high level in La Liga and he is ready to right for his place at Athletic Club.
