Athletic Club 5-1 Las Palmas: Postgame Player Comments

Athletic Club’s 5-1 victory over Las Palmas on Friday was one of the best performances of the entire season. The win saw the Lions climb to 6th in the league table, a mere point off of Villarreal. Following the game, Iker Muniain and Mikel San Jose spoke to the media to discuss the game and what the victory means to the team. The pair combined for three of Athletic’s five goals and received standing ovations from the San Mames crowd. Here is what they had to say:

Iker Muniain

“It was a magical night at the Cathedral. These three points are super important and will help us continue our fight for Europe. It was a great game from beginning to end. We were ambitious and I am personally happy for my two goals and to help the team keep adding points. We all played well and in front we did some interesting things. By winning, we forced our direct rivals to add points. We did our job and now we have a few days to rest.”

Mikel San Jose

“It has been a complete game from start to finish. Winning is always nice. Seven days ago they won 4-1 at home so they had a lot of confidence. We knew we have to work as a team and make things hard for them. We did well to steal the ball and create many scoring chances. We knew that they always want to have the ball and we saw that in the first half. Personally I am happy and sorry to the fans. I’m happy I scored the first goal, but sorry that I missed a very clear chance later. The last month has been very regular and competitive. We are running well and hopefully we can continue in this form. Qualifying for Europe is very difficult because there are a lot of teams competing. We made it harder for our rivals today. Both the fans and us needed a match like this. Now we can enjoy the rest until Monday.”
