Gorka Iraizoz’s time at Athletic is coming to an end. The 36-year-old has been the starting keeper for roughly a decade, but this season he lost that role to Kepa Arrizabalaga. Due to his age and expiring contract, Athleic has chosen to not extend his deal which will make him a free player this summer.
While Iraizoz may not be thinking about his future yet, other clubs are. According to a report from El Desmarque Bizkaia, Levante is lining up a move to sign Iraizoz to be their starting keeper next season.
Levante is currently leading the Segunda table and, discount in anything crazy happening, should earn promotion back to the Primera for next season. In anticipation of this, they have been busy looking for ways to strengthen their squad for next season. Signing Iraizoz is one of their top priorities.
It will be up to Iraizoz to decided whether he wants to retire or continue playing. In a recent interview he said that those were his two choices and that he felt like he still had something to accomplish in his career. Joining Levante would allow him to remain in La Liga, but it is not known if he wants to take over the starting role at a club just making their way back to the top flight.
